Beyonce Knowles: A brief biography
Beyonce’s rise from childhood talent to worldwide star
The Early Life
Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was born on September 4th, 1981 in Houston, Texas. Beyonce took an interest in performing
arts at an early age, attending dance school and singing in her church’s choir by the age of five. Her dance
instructor began taking Knowles to talent competitions. Knowles won over thirty local singing and dancing
competitions as a child.
As a young girl, Beyonce formed a girl group called “Girl’s Tyme” and competed in Star Search. Although they lost,
her father quit his regular job to help propel the group to stardom. The group was signed on to Columbia records in
1996 and eventually changed their name to Destiny’s Child.
Destiny’s Child
Destiny’s Child skyrocketed to fame in 1998 with a Billboard top-ten hit and a number one R&B single called
“No, No, No Part2.” Although two of the original group members departed amid much controversy, Destiny’s Child went
on to become one of the most popular pop acts of the early 2000s. The group charted four Billboard Hot 100
number-one singles, many top-ten hits, and two number-one albums.
Going Solo
By 2003, Knowles released her solo debut album, Dangerously in Love. This album entered at number one on the
Billboard 200, selling over three hundred thousand copies in its first week. It went on to become one of the most
commercially successful albums in the UK and the US. It earned Beyonce two number one singles, “Crazy in Love” and
“Baby Boy.” Beyonce also earned five Grammy Awards in a single night in 2004. Knowles’ second album, B’Day, was
released on September 4th, 2006 and sold more than 541,000 copies in the US. This is her highest first-week sale to
date as a solo artist.
Other projects
Beyonce also starred in the movie Goldmember in 2002, recording a single for the movie soundtrack called “Work it
out.” She starred with Cuba Gooding Jr. in the movie The Fighting Temptations. Knowles also co-starred opposite
Steve Martin in the movie Pink Panther, which debuted at number one on the box office. Beyonce has starred in two
movies to date that have gone on to box office success.
Knowles was also a featured vocalist on rap artist Jay-Z’s single “Bonnie and
Clyde.” She recorded a duet with Luther Vandross-a remark of the song “The Closer I Get to you.” She has also
recorded a duet with Latin pop-star sensation Shakira called “Beautiful Liar.”
Personal Life
Knowles dated rapper Jay-Z starting 2002. The couple has kept their relationship private, refraining from
discussing the details in the media or in public. Knowles claimed that keeping the relationship out of the public
eye helps them grow stronger as a couple.
